The basics of protein powder

Let's get this out of the way, without protein in our diets we would have several health problems. Protein is present in all of our cells making up the tissues and organs in our bodies. When our bodies don't get enough protein it will start breaking down muscle tissue to get what it needs also putting our bones and organs at risk! This concludes that protein is essential to our bodies, but it also raises the question;

"Do we need to protein powder to support good health?"

No, we do not need protein powder to support good health but we can definitely use it as a tool if its necessary.


1. You value time

  • If you find yourself failing to meal prep due to the lack of time and you end up choosing fast food instead protein powder may be a great option for you. You can easily add different foods to make yourself a well-balanced snack/meal.

2. You're dieting

  • Protein powder (no meal replacement powder) consists of majority protein and small amounts of fats and carbs. This can be beneficial to you if you're trying to control the number of fats and carbs you are intaking.

3. You're a vegetarian/vegan

  • A lot of meat eaters switch to a vegetarian or vegan diet due to ethical reasons. When this happens they tend to lack protein in their diets. Using a vegan brand of protein powder can easily make up for lack of protein they are consuming.

4. You lack nutrients

  • Let's face it you don't like eating fruits or vegetables. Try blending either frozen fruits, frozen vegetables, OR powdered greens with your protein powder for a delicious healthy smoothy. Adding these will help you get your daily micros and improve your health.


Casein Protein - Casein is considered "slow" protein due to the fact it digests slower than whey protein.

Whey Protein - Whey is considered "fast" protein due to the fact it digests rapidly.

Soy Protein - Soy is a plant-based protein that is found naturally in soybeans, edamame, and tofu.

Which one is best?

Obviously, if you're a vegan you will choose soy protein due to the fact casein and whey protein are a by-product of milk. A lot of people will argue between casein and whey protein debating which one is better. The truth is both have benefits and to completely disregard one of them wouldn't be beneficial.


If you're someone who is pressed for time, dieting, a vegetarian/vegan, lacking nutrients, or you're just having problems meeting your daily protein requirements than protein shakes may be a great fit for you. We do not recommend replacing meals for just protein shakes as the quality of protein in food is generally better than the protein in powdered supplements.
