Up until I started training with Matt last summer, I had been on and off weight training on my own terms, doing what I thought was ‘proper’ lifting workouts, a mix of HIIT, and then a random surges of all-consuming cardio when I thought that was the only answer to weight-loss.
I started at Gents Fitness last summer and it was the best decision I could have made! Before training with Matt, I felt lost when going to the gym and didn’t feel like I was making any progress. Through training with Matt, he introduced me to a variety of weightlifting exercises to incorporate into my workouts and helped improve my form. Matt kept me motivated and taught me how to customize and plan my workouts so that now when I go into the gym I feel comfortable and confident with what I am doing!
I hadn't stepped foot in a gym in 20 years, and over the years I have used a few personal trainers at home. I decided a few months ago it was time to try out the gym again. For the first 2 months, I was just weight training on my own and getting programs off the internet. But then I realized I needed to get an expert to teach me how to make the most of all the gym equipment as well as set up a good ongoing program.
As someone who has worked with personal trainers in the past, I was never quite satisfied with my results. After receiving recommendations to contact Matt, I decided to give it a try and was not disappointed!
3 months ago when I started with Matt I was just around a year removed from a compression fracture of my t12 vertebrae. After spending 3 months not working, exercising (aside from short walks) or spending more than 10-15 standing or sitting I was in an incredibly bad place mentally and physically. I was pushing 300 pounds, felt weak and ashamed of where my fitness and body had fallen to, I lacked motivation and the know how to get myself into a routine to make the changes I wanted to.
Matt has been training me since he started Gents Fitness. It is amazing having a trainer who is so passionate about what he does and genuinely wants the best for his clients. Before I started training with Matt, I had no confidence. I was one of those girls who gravitated towards the cardio machines. Although cardio is a great workout, I wanted to perform other workouts as well. With the help of Matt, he has taught me proper form for several exercises as well as provide me with a program for me to complete on my own. Now I can walk into the gym with confidence and not be restricted to just run on the treadmill. I could not have done it without the help of Matt!
He may originate from a small town called Stouffville but in my eyes, he is a big-time trainer. I started working with Matt back in 2016 when he launched Gents Fitness and since then he has helped me get stronger and more fit. Matt offers a customized workout plan to work exactly how you want it to, and he will also give you nutritional advice or meal plans. If you choose to work with Matt don’t expect any shortcuts, I haven't seen them in his plans because he won't give them to you. In his free time Matt is constantly educating himself in the health fitness field to learn new techniques and information that will help his clients transform into a better them. I am confident that Matt and I will be working together for years to come!
Cardio was always my go to at the gym, I dreaded lifting weights. Although I loved a good run I never saw the results that I wanted. Over the course of working out with Matt I developed a true love for lifting weights and I also became more comfortable, knowledgeable and confident doing so. Matt never let me say “no” to doing an exercise. He kept me motivated and focused. Week after week I could lift more weight than I thought possible. Not only was I seeing results but I was having fun. If you are looking for someone to help you reach your goals and share a good laugh look no further.
After training with Matt at Gents fitness it was clear that his passion and dedication was going to help me reach my fitness goals. I believe that his knowledge of nutrition, workout planning and his ability to teach proper technique will help me and any other client improve their fitness level and training ability. I am a 5' 10 tall 23-year female. I have always loved being active, and played tons of sports growing up. The last year and a half however, I've been in school and working, and I struggled with eating properly and getting myself into the gym. I ended up getting very depressed and was stress eating like my life depended on it. Once summer time hit, something in me said it was time to take back control of my body - what I was putting into it and how I was treating it. I messaged Matt and asked him to help me get in gear and push me past my comfort zone. And that's what he's done. For the last 3 months, Matt has been training me 3-5 times a week with personalized work outs that have helped me drop weight, gain muscle, and most importantly, grow back my confidence! While I still have a long way to go to get where I want to be, I’m still very proud of how far I’ve already come mentally and physically. And I couldn’t have done it without Matt. He's done so much to help me and I am so grateful!
I had a trainer before but was always scared to get "too big" or "too muscular" so I focused on being skinny. When I started working with Matt, he encouraged me to lift heavy and helped me realize I wanted a big booty and to be strong more than I wanted to be super skinny. Matt gives me the confidence to try heavier weights and push myself to beat those weights. Matt got me excited about working out and making it a priority in my life. I know I can always text or call him with any questions related to my health and he'll happily answer or find me the answer if he isn't sure.
